The cold is about to knock on our doorstep. What practices can you do during the fall season to maintain healthy trees?
1. Regular Pruning: Prune any dead or decaying branches or limbs to avoid them becoming an issue once frozen. Pruning helps establish strong structure by removing dead or diseased branches, which could become dangerous: especially when weighed down with snow and ice.
2. Raking Strategically: While the leaves from a diseased tree should be raked up, having some leaf cover on the ground is not a bad thing in a healthy environment. Leaves break down and add nutrients back into the soil through decomposition: a free and effortless fertilizer.
3. Mulching: Mulching can help your tree retain moisture and therefore warmth, while also acting like a fertilizer to prepare trees for the upcoming colder months. To better insulate the mulch and help keep roots warm as temperatures drop, burlap or tarps can be used to cover susceptible roots and trunks.
4. Watering: Continue to water your trees throughout the fall. This promotes health and growth and impacts how quickly they will leave dormancy and bloom when spring returns.
